Homearama 2009 showcases quality of life

Article by Claus Ihlemann & Robert Roman

Homearama 2009 Norfolk, VAHomearama 2009 represented a delightful return to core values. Developed on the former Culpepper Family Farm, this 488-acre neighborhood encompasses a 150-acre conservation area, the Dismal Swamp Canal and has easy access to the Deep Creek Community Park. All this and you’re only 20 minutes from the hustle and bustle of the great restaurants and entertainment in Downtown Norfolk and Ghent.

This year, Homearama featured homes on a much smaller scale with a strong focus on “Quality of Life.” The design of the 12 homes is rooted in the Arts and Crafts Tradition with each builder providing their unique touch and perspective. The exteriors include large porches as gathering places for friends and neighbors and provide a strong sense of community. The interior of the homes feature very livable floor plan and open spaces. There are also lots of nooks and crannies, such as small benches incorporated in a staircase, bookcases flanking the fireplaces for additional storage or a wine rack as a practical way to enhance the kitchen cabinets.

Claus-Ihlemann-and-Robert-RomanAs you look around your home and contemplate, “What’s the next decorating project?” you need to consider a variety of options.

First of all, always approach a project with the end result in mind. These considerations can make the difference between stunning and mediocre!

So… here are some ideas.

Pick a theme, and truly… this can be any theme. Remember there are really no bad ideas. If you enjoy travel, the theme may be your favorite travel destination and the décor reflective of the style and culture at this destination. Or, the theme may be a featured home you find especially appealing from your favorite shelter magazine... Your style may be Mid-Century Modern, Italian Contemporary, English Country or “early attic!” Pick it and stick to it!

Hanging PicturesAn arrangement of favorite, framed photographs, wall art, and collectibles can add personality and warmth to any room. When done correctly, wall art can change the focal point or the entire look of any room.

  • Pictures should hang just above eye level. There is great debate over what "proper eye level" is. Some say "eye level" should be considered as if viewers were standing. Others say "eye level" should be considered as if viewers were seated. Still others say that "eye level" should be determined according to the primary use of the room. (This means, if most of the time people are standing in the space, like a hallway, then "eye level" should be directed at viewers who are standing. In a room where viewers will spend the majority of the time seated, like a living room, 'eye level" would be from a seated position.)

How and where should wall art be arranged? Well, ask yourself where you would like the "eyes" to focus.
